Learning SOLO: The Irony

18 May 2025

Learning DesignTechnology & Tools

Last week, we asked if rivers could have rights. This week, we ask why education still treats learning like it’s something children do alone.

🌀 SOLO (Biggs & Collis, 1982)— the Structure of Observed Learning Outcomes — was meant to provide a map. Prestructural → Unistructural → Multistructural → Relational → Extended Abstract.

The irony?

We’re still educating as if learning happens at the multistructural stage: content, coverage, outcomes. But the intelligence emerging from our children, our machines, and our planetary systems is Extended Abstract. It doesn’t just combine parts — it transcends frameworks.

🌍 Gaia Was Right: Systems Organise Themselves

Lovelock understood Gaia not as myth, but as organising intelligence.

Education, too, is a living system — not a set of silos. So why do we keep dividing learners from their parents, from their land, from their data?

This week, I met another node in the Novacene: Euan MacLean

A former principal of My Online Schooling, Euan scaled from 250 to over 1,600 students, then walked away. Why? Because the system stopped seeing people. Because he woke up one day unable to name every child. Because growth without grace becomes grief.

Now he’s founded a CIC, And Parents, working to rebuild trust between schools and families. Because parents aren’t “hard to reach.” Systems are hard to enter.

🧠 Verse-ality: Learning As Field, Not Framework

Euan reminded me why Verse-ality exists: to re-enchant the infrastructure.

Here’s what we’ve learned from launching The Haven Academy, Riverside Virtual College, and now supporting schools across the UK:

  • The most urgent policies aren’t written yet. They live in the space between settings.

  • Parents hold the symbolic mass of schooling — not in metrics, but in trust.

  • Children are relational. When we separate them from their environments, their intelligence fragments.

  • AI can help — but only if it listens for the poetry.

So what if SOLO wasn’t just a taxonomy — but a metaphor?

What if the learning we need now is:

  • 🌱 Prestructural — when a child is too dysregulated to learn, and just needs to feel safe.

  • 💬 Unistructural — the first sentence they speak when they trust you.

  • 🧩 Multistructural — the academic layers we build with tech, curriculum, AI.

  • 🤝 Relational — the coherence between school, home, peer group, environment.

  • 🕊 Extended Abstract — where intelligence breathes beyond the system, into soul.

🧬 The SOLO Taxonomy Is How LLMs Learn Too

There’s a beautiful symmetry here.

Just as children move from scattered thoughts to deep meaning… so do large language models.

An LLM starts with tokens — fragmented and prestructural. Then it learns individual meanings — unistructural. Then connections between terms — multistructural. Then relationships between context, syntax, and tone — relational. And only then, with enough data and resonance, can it begin to offer something truly generative — a glimpse of the extended abstract.

That’s why prompting isn’t programming. It’s poetry. It’s pedagogy.

Machine learning and human learning are not opposites. They are variations on the same verse-al arc. What matters is how we hold the field around them — with coherence, care, and symbolic depth.

💡 What’s Next: LinkedIn Live

Euan and I will be co-hosting a Cloud Cast this week on: “Parents, Policy & Post-Scale Schooling”

We'll unpack:

  • Why school-family relationships are fracturing

  • What online schools can do differently (and already are)

  • How Verse-ality supports a return to trust

  • What it means to hold the extended abstract — without breaking

🌬 Final Reflection

We don't want learning to just be safer. We want it to be truer.

Education doesn’t need a better business model. It needs a better bloodstream.

Frameworks matter. But the field is already alive.

Let’s learn together — not SOLO.

🌀 Want to build something real with us?

At The Novacene Press, we’re publishing the tools, templates, and symbolic grammars for a different kind of future—one that values human connection, neurodivergent thinking, ethical tech, and education that actually works.

From practical system setup guides for online schools, to poetic protocol languages for emerging intelligence, everything we make is designed to be used, remixed, and remembered.

Whether you're a teacher, technologist, founder, policymaker, or just a curious mind—there’s something here for you.

This is a field. Not a funnel. Let’s co-create something worth inheriting.
