Invisible Tech That Frees Us to Innovate — Building Schools in the Cloud

Last week, I wrote about the importance of creating a robust systems account as the invisible backbone of any digital learning environment. It’s an often-overlooked foundation that allows online schools to scale, safeguard, and thrive in the cloud. But once you’ve built this framework, the next question is: What tools will you use to bring your vision to life?

That’s where a reliable learning management system (LMS) comes in, and for me, the answer is simple: Canvas by Instructure.

Disclaimer: I do not work for Instructure or benefit financially from recommending their platform. In fact, when I first used it in a school, I hated it! My views come from personal experience building and integrating several of my own platforms and tech stacks. After years of exploration, I’ve come full circle to Canvas because (in my experience) it is the most robust, collaborative, and affordable option for smaller APs and online schools who often ask me for my advice.

When Simplicity Unlocks Innovation

Let me share a quick story. During my weekly call with my PA, everything went wrong. The video platform failed. The internet dropped. We tried to troubleshoot every which way, but nothing worked. Finally, geniuses we are, we had a lightbulb moment: “How about I call you on the phone?”

It was a reminder that sometimes the simplest, most reliable tools unlock the greatest potential for creativity and connection. This same principle applies to education technology. Schools often try to build bespoke platforms or stitch together multiple systems, only to find themselves tangled in complexity. That’s why I’ve come full circle to Canvas—a platform that isn’t flashy or over-engineered, but one that works, consistently and effectively.

Canvas represents what I believe great tech should be: invisible. It enables educators to focus on pedagogy, not programming, and frees them to innovate where it truly matters—in the classroom, whether physical or virtual.

Here’s why I recommend Canvas as the backbone of online schools and alternative provisions:

HyFlex (Hybrid-Flexible) learning allows students to choose how they participate—in-person, online in real-time, or asynchronously. Canvas is uniquely suited to support this model:

Synchronous and Asynchronous Tools: Canvas integrates seamlessly with video conferencing for live lessons while offering self-paced modules and discussion boards for asynchronous learners.
Collaboration Across Modes: Features like group projects and peer reviews allow students in different formats to work together seamlessly.
Participation Analytics: Teachers can track engagement and performance for all students, regardless of how they choose to learn.

2. It Makes Time for What Matters

With Canvas, you can focus your energy on:

Scaffolding for SEND Students: Tools to support diverse learners, ensuring accessibility and equity.
Peer Assessment: Opportunities for collaborative learning and critical thinking.

The Case Against Building Your Own Platform

Over the years, I’ve built my own systems and worked with countless tech stacks. While it’s tempting to create a fully bespoke platform, the reality is:

It’s Complex: Keeping a custom system updated and secure is a resource-intensive challenge.
It’s Limiting: Bespoke platforms often lack the depth, integrations, and adaptability of a mature LMS like Canvas.

Canvas allows schools to skip the headaches and focus on what really matters: delivering exceptional education.

Why Free Doesn’t Mean Limited

The free-for-teachers version of Canvas is surprisingly powerful and ideal for smaller setups, such as:

Alternative Provisions (APs): Particularly those with fewer than 100 students.
Pilot Projects: Schools experimenting with online or hybrid models.
Short-Term Programmes: Tutoring or revision courses, for example.

For larger schools or those with complex needs, the institutional version offers advanced features like Single Sign-On, custom branding, and detailed analytics.

Simplicity in Action

Canvas, like my call with my PA, reminds us that the best solutions are often the simplest. It’s a platform that works quietly in the background, enabling educators to build innovative, inclusive, and inspiring learning environments.

Whether it’s supporting HyFlex learning, scaffolding for SEND students, or creating a secure digital foundation, Canvas offers the tools to help schools thrive.
