Why the best learning crosses boundaries — and how to build it

When most schools talk about “cross-curricular” or “multidisciplinary” units, what they mean is this:

A maths teacher and a science teacher agree to use the same theme for a couple of weeks.

True multidisciplinary learning is when a single project draws from multiple ways of knowing — intellectual, sensory, emotional, and symbolic — and the learner moves naturally between disciplines because the project demands it.

What makes a multidisciplinary unit actually work?

From our work at The Haven Academy and with partner schools, we’ve found these principles hold true:

Start with the learner, not the syllabus If you build around curriculum documents first, you’ll flatten the magic. Begin with a profile: age, interests, symbolic traits, neurodivergent needs, emotional readiness.
Build a compelling narrative frame Every good multidisciplinary project needs a hook — a quest, a mystery, a “what if?” that invites curiosity and risk-taking.
Make it multi-sensory and symbolic Bring in sound, movement, visual prompts, tactile making. Use imagery, myths, or glyphs to spark resonance.
Align subtly to the curriculum The curriculum should be a trail of signposts through the woods, not the fence around the forest. Learners should hit core skills as a byproduct of the journey.
Honour agency and sovereignty Build in opt-in activities, side quests, and multiple ways to demonstrate understanding. This is essential for trauma-informed and neurodivergent-affirming practice.
