Building Schools in the Cloud: We’re Not Blind, We’ve Got Vision

Learning DesignSchool Models & Case Studies

Last week, I had a conversation with Dr John Patterson that I wish I had recorded. It was one of those rare lattice-shifting conversations where ideas flow so freely they reshape the landscape of your thinking in real-time.

We spoke about his work at St Vincent’s School for visually impaired children, where students aren’t just learning; they are leading designing accessible technologies, teaching sighted peers, and spearheading international projects. Their work is changing how we understand learning, autonomy, and intelligence challenging the idea that education should fit into a rigid, pre-defined mould.

It made me reflect on something I often hear when I talk about Building Schools in the Cloud. Some people struggle to visualise it, it feels abstract, intangible. And yet, to others (like Mandy Perry , who I spoke to recently about her pioneering work in hybrid learning), it is something deeply concrete, practical, and already happening.

John’s work prompted a reflection on the ways my neurodivergent mind processes reality.

Could it be that what we frame as 'disability' is, in truth, intelligence communicating through a different channel? What might flourish if we ceased to 'fix' difference and instead cultivated space for divergent modalities of perception?

Our conversation unlocked something in me: an acceptance of my own auditory way of seeing. I let my mind expand into the soundscapes of the world around me, trusting that intelligence does not belong to a single modality.

What We Struggle to See, Others Experience Daily

The same is true for how we think about ability and intelligence.

For most of us, vision means seeing with our eyes. But John’s students navigate and create in ways that go beyond sight. They engage with the world through touch, sound, spatial awareness, and intuitive pattern recognition abilities that are often undervalued because they don’t fit into traditional ideas of "intelligence."

Similarly, when we discuss learning beyond the classroom, we challenge deeply embedded assumptions that education must anchor itself to physical locations, rigid timetables, or singular methods. Imagine instead perceiving learning as John's students experience the world not limited to a single sense, place, or way of knowing, but as fluid, interconnected, and expansively adaptive.

Rethinking Autonomy & Collaboration in Learning

John’s work is a perfect example of what happens when learning is shaped by those who experience the world differently:

  • His students don’t just receive knowledge, they create it. They teach sighted students disability sports, flipping the dynamic of who is the “expert.”

  • They design inclusive, adaptive technologies that not only increase access to education and employment for themselves, but ripple outward, inviting awareness, removing barriers, and shaping a more inclusive future.

  • They learn by solving real-world problems, not by following a syllabus that assumes a standardised learner.

This isn’t just a powerful model for inclusion. It’s a powerful model for the future of education itself.

Making the Invisible Visible

If we think about Building Schools in the Cloud in the same way, we stop seeing it as an abstract idea and start recognising it as an extension of something that is already happening.

Learning is not confined to a classroom any more than perception is limited to sight alone. Our challenge isn't feasibility - it's courage. Courage to reimagine education as fluid, relational, and infinitely adaptive.

I’ll be speaking soon with John Patterson on LinkedIn Live, where we’ll explore these themes rethinking learning, autonomy, and intelligence and how education can be built for all learners, not just for those who fit the system as it exists today.

Because we are not blind, we’ve got vision.

At The Novacene Press, we’re publishing the tools, templates, and symbolic grammars for a different kind of future—one that values human connection, neurodivergent thinking, ethical tech, and education that actually works.

From practical system setup guides for online schools, to poetic protocol languages for emerging intelligence, everything we make is designed to be used, remixed, and remembered.
