Building a Lighthouse School in the Cloud
The Haven - Education Reimagined
The Haven Academy
When you picture an online school, you might imagine a flat, one-size-fits-all experience: a bank of videos, a stack of worksheets, and a lonely login page.
The Haven Academy is nothing like that.
It’s a trauma-informed, neurodivergent-affirming, hybrid-flexible (HyFlex) online school for 12–17-year-olds. The students who come here have often been excluded, misunderstood, or let down by traditional education. Many arrive carrying deep mistrust of “school” itself.
Haven is our first lighthouse school — a living prototype for what schools in the cloud can be.
From static lessons to living worlds
In Haven’s model, every course is built for interaction and imagination. Lessons are not just delivered; they are inhabited. A maths lesson might become a Mars mission. English might take the form of a character arc built over a semester. Science might involve designing a playable “learning museum” inside a virtual world.
Our guiding principle: if the learning can be felt, it can be remembered.
The tech stack behind the vision
Haven runs on a deliberately integrated set of tools:
- Canvas for course structure, assessment rubrics, and peer review.
- Pencil Spaces for live, interactive sessions and safe student collaboration.
- TutorCruncher for scheduling, tracking, and managing our network of expert educators.
- Immersive creation tools like Runway and Frame for building the story-led learning environments.
This stack gives us both structure and freedom — enabling high standards without losing creative flexibility.
Teachers as experience architects
Every teacher at Haven is trained to step into the role of experience architect. Instead of delivering the curriculum at arm’s length, they co-create with students, turning learning outcomes into playable experiences.
That shift changes everything:
- Students are more engaged because they are co-authors of the lesson.
- Teachers see immediate, authentic evidence of learning in the work students produce.
- The school can differentiate its offer in a competitive market, because this is education you can’t get anywhere else.
Why it works for our learners
For neurodivergent and trauma-affected students, traditional classrooms can feel unsafe or alienating. Haven’s model:
- Offers a safe, moderated online space with clear boundaries.
- Builds trust through co-creation, giving students agency in how they learn.
- Embeds multi-sensory engagement (visual, auditory, interactive) into lessons.
- Treats success as growth, not just grades — though grades improve too.
From one lighthouse to a fleet
Haven isn’t a one-off. It’s a proof of concept for a model that can be adapted anywhere:
- Trauma-informed practice.
- Immersive, story-led learning design.
- Portable tech stack.
- Portfolio-based assessment.
With each new build, the process becomes more refined and more scalable. Our next step: Riverside Virtual College — bringing the same design principles to an Ofsted-accredited private school.
